“in our health-conscious society, viruses of any type are an enemy. Just as proper diet, exercise and preventative health care can add years to your life, prudent and cost-effective anti-virus strategies can minimize your exposure to computer viruses” (Symantec, 1999)

Microsoft: extortion, expedience and the extinction of the AV industry?

Microsoft officially joined the market of the antivirus industry in 2 June 2006 when Windows OneCare Live was released. The subscription fee is in line with the others competitors: 49.95$ a year. The short term impact of Microsoft is negligible, but experts have no peace to try to forecast the future changes of the industry. The power of Microsoft is called Ms Windows. Windows is the “guest house” of all the software developers. Antivirus software vendors sell their products especially for the Windows Platform, some of them live only with windows; no more sales for Windows would be correlated to bankrupt. Current players set the bar for quality, it remains to be seen how high Microsoft can jump. Which player will be more damanged?
