Why do we have to pay when we can get everything for free?

So far I've read a lot of reviews with comparisons between security software (mainly from magazines). My temporary conclusion at the beginning stage of my research is that the value added by the no-freeware software are negligible and sometimes freewares perform even better in terms of effectiveness and especially speed.
